Set up for a dream final

Read Thomas Johansson's (Tournament Director) thoughts about the final day.

Who gets to lift the trophy in this year's If Stockholm Open will be decided today. The two audience favorites, Jarkko Nieminen and Gaël Monfils, will battle for the title. It is set up for a major tennis party at the Kungl. (Royal) Tennis Hall!

First up today at 12:45 is the doubles final being played between first-seeded Rohan Bopanna/Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi and fourth-seeded Marcelo Melo/Bruno Soares. For Bopanna/Qureshi, this is an incredibly important final because they will compete for a spot in the ATP finals in London. Melo/Soares play a bit differently in doubles, and in yesterday's semifinal they managed to defeat the defending champions. Today, they have a good chance to win against the favorites.

At 15:00 it’s time for the final we have all been waiting for. Frenchman Gaël Monfils is the favorite on paper in today's match-up, while Jarkko has the upper hand in the stands with the support from many Finnish fans who traveled here. But Jarkko will have tough competition from Monfils who really charmed the audience here at the Kungl. (Royal) Tennis Hall. Both players are looking for their first title of the year and some nerves will certainly be involved.

I was very impressed by Jarkko’s game against Blake yesterday. It has been a long time since I saw him so aggressive on the court, which often is a positive sign that someone is in good shape. His only obstacle to finally win a title in Stockholm is Monfils, who looked incredibly psyched in his semifinal game.

The Frenchman has played better and better as the week has gone by and is going to be incredibly hard to beat today. It must feel like a great achievement to get the chance to take the trophy after Roger Federer, who in my opinion is the greatest player of all time. Last year, Federer was a clear favorite in the final, while this year's final feels more open. The audience could not wish for a better final, when the big crowd favorite battles for this year's title.
